How is a Massage at Divine Spark different than other practices?

Massage therapy has been practiced for centuries to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and alleviate muscle tension. Over time, various approaches to massage have emerged, each offering distinct benefits. At Divine Spark, we look beyond just the physical aspects and consider our massages to be holistic healing massages.

What is the difference between a regular massage at another practice and massage with a holistic healing emphasis provided by a massage therapist at Divine Spark? Let's take a look.

The Philosophy: The primary difference between a regular basic massage from another practice and a massage at Divine Spark lies in their underlying philosophies.

A regular basic massage from another practice: Typically focuses on addressing specific physical concerns, such as muscle tension, knots, or soreness. The therapist aims to manipulate the soft tissues using various techniques, including Swedish, deep tissue, or sports massage, with the primary goal of providing physical relaxation and pain relief.

Holistic Healing Massage from Divine Spark: On the other hand, at Divine Spark in addition to addressing the physical aspects, we look at massage from a holistic perspective that goes beyond mere physical relief. It follows a more comprehensive approach that acknowledges the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit. The philosophy behind the holistic healing massage experience we provide emphasizes the importance of balancing and harmonizing all aspects of an individual's well-being. This approach considers that emotional, mental, and spiritual imbalances can manifest as physical discomfort, and vice versa.

Techniques and Approach

Basic Massage from another practice: A regular basic massage employs a set of standard techniques, such as kneading, tapping, stroking, and friction, to manipulate the soft tissues. It is usually applied to specific areas of tension or discomfort, targeting localized issues to promote muscle relaxation and increased blood circulation. The goal is to alleviate immediate physical discomfort and provide relaxation in the targeted area.

Massage from Divine Spark: At Divine Spark, on the other hand, not only do we incorporate the standard massage techniques but during a massage we integrate a broader range of techniques, often blending traditional massage methods with elements from other healing modalities like energy work, aromatherapy, and mindfulness practices. This holistic approach aims to address the client's emotional and energetic imbalances along with physical tension. The therapist may incorporate breathing exercises, visualization, or guided meditation to enhance the overall healing experience.

Therapeutic Outcomes

Regular Basic Massage from another practice: The therapeutic outcomes of a regular basic massage typically revolve around physical relief and relaxation. It can help reduce muscle stiffness, ease joint pain, improve blood circulation, and promote overall well-being. The benefits are often short-term and are most effective for individuals experiencing localized physical discomfort.

Massage from Divine Spark: We seek to promote profound and long-lasting benefits by addressing the root causes of both physical and emotional issues. The integrated approach aims to provide relaxation, reduce stress and anxiety, and foster emotional healing. By treating the whole person rather than just the physical symptoms, holistic healing massage encourages a sense of overall balance and harmony.

How often should I get a massage?

The frequency of how often massage is recommended is based on your goals. Everybody and Every Body is different. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Relaxation: If relaxation is your goal then consider your stress levels. If you have a minimal amount of stress then once a month should suffice. If your stress levels are higher we recommend every 2 weeks.

  • Pain relief and improved range of motion:

    • Pain is minor and causes some tension: Once a month or every 2 to 3 weeks

    • Pain is moderate and causes some issues with range of motion: Once every 2 weeks until there is a 50% improvement in pain reduction and improved range of motion, Then every 3 weeks until there is a 50% further improvement and then once  a month for maintenance.

    • Pain is severe and it prevents you from activities you enjoy or effects your mobility: We recommend scheduling once a week massage therapy sessions until there is a 50% improvement in pain reduction and range of motion. Then we recommend every two weeks until there is a 50% further improvement. Once there is a significant improvement, appointments can be spaced out to every 3 weeks to 4 weeks for maintenance.

The Divine Spark Experience: What makes us unique

At Divine Spark quality matters and that translates into an amazing customer experience. Here are a few things that we are proud of that sets us apart in the Richmond VA massage market.

1) Expertise: At Divine Spark we only hire the very best Licensed Massage Therapists. In fact we have been voted Best Massage in Richmond by Expertise for the past 3 years. Each therapist has the experience, qualifications and expertise necessary to provide each client with exactly what they need to feel their best. Techniques include but are not limited to: Swedish Massage, trigger point therapy, deep tissue massage, NMT (neuromuscular therapy), PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation), sports massage, acupressure, myofascial release, rocking, pin & move/stretch, jostling, and stretching.

2) Customized Massage and Experience Our massage therapists do not follow a routine or provide a vanilla massage. Each massage is crafted based on what the client is experiencing and what they need. As the massage therapist is working they will pull from the plethora of techniques that they have in their toolkit and will apply the technique that will work best with the quality of the tissue, the client's comfort and the results they are seeking.

3) All Inclusive Price: Most massage practices will charge you $15 to $20 for each add on for items like aromatherapy, hot towels, scalp massage, hand massage, foot massage etc. At Divine Spark we do no charge extra for these items. All of these are included in the price. This ensures that you receive an optimal experience without price gauging.

4) Full Time: If you book a 60min massage, you receive a 60min massage, not 50min.

5) Lasting Results: At Divine Spark we are focused on helping you feel your best. We specialize in pain management and stress reduction. At the beginning of the session we get an overview of the areas the client would like to focus on and take a full assessment to ensure we deliver optimal results. We provide lifestyle recommendations, exercises and treatment plans that will be beneficial in reducing pain and increasing flexibility and range of motion. That way the benefits of the massage session will last longer and you will feel better between sessions.

How to Choose a Massage Therapist

Have you considered massage as part of your health routine? Sometimes it's hard to know where to start when selecting a massage therapist. Here are a few things that can help you narrow down your search:

1) Do your research: Doing an online search for massage therapists near you is a great start but it doesn't end there. Once you've found 3 to 5 therapists near you, we recommend that you take a close look at what they are offering. Is it a Spa environment where they only specialize in relaxation? Is it a Sports Massage clinic that only offers deep tissue and stretching? Is it a Therapeutic clinic that offers a variety of modalities? At Divine Spark we offer a variety of modalities and reassess the client before beginning each session. This informs us on the appropriate techniques and best practices to customize the session to meet your unique needs. That way we're giving you exactly what you need in each Therapeutic massage session. We also make recommendations based on what we find. This will provide you will long lasting results.

2) Try them out: We recommend that you set up a 60-90min session before committing to a specific therapist. During this initial session, you will be able to gauge the effectiveness of the session. Was there a thorough intake process? Did the therapist check-in with you throughout the session? Did you feel or see improvement post-session? The massage therapist should be able to apply techniques that provide some relief even in the first session. Did they give you homework or provide and assessment of what they found? At Divine Spark we offer 15% off your first session so that you can evaluate us and see whether or not we are a good fit for you.
