Balance the Elements with Thai Massage: Feeling bloated? Anxious? Angry?


Balance the Elements with Thai Massage

Feeling out of whack? What does it look like when you have an excess of fire, water or wind?

Here are a few indicators according to Thai healing tradition:

Excess wind: Nervousness, racing thoughts, anxiety, insomnia, shaking or tremors


Excess water: Depression, worry, bloating, weight gain, lack of energy or motivation


Excess fire: Angers easily, upset stomach, rashes, high blood pressure, skin disorders

So what can we do to regain balance? Here are a few lifestyle adjustments to assist in finding your balance:

To balance wind:

  • Begin a calming exercise routine with gentle exercises such as Yoga, Thai Chi, Qi Gong, walking etc.

  • Deep breathing is very calming on the system. Focus on long deep breathing for 5 min a day or slow your breath when feeling over stimulated.

  • Run a humidifier in your home or work area.

  • Eat 4 to 5 smaller meals a day.

  • Eat oily fish, avocado and hummus to dampen the wind.

  • Mango, pear, avocado are the best fruits for windy people.

To balance water:

  • Increase exercise to burn off the excess water through sweating (running, elliptical, dancing etc.)

  • Drink warm liquid in the morning- 2 cups of hot water with lemon or lime, hot tea or broth.

  • Increase intake of hot and spicy foods.

  • Avoid dairy and raw foods (cook or warm up vegetables before eating.)

  • Drink hot tea before bed.

  • Banana, papaya and eggs are great of water people.

  • Add astringent foods like ginger, lemon and grapefruit

To balance fire:

  • Add an aggressive form of exercise to release fire (boxing, martial arts, competitive sports etc.)

  • Take long baths to introduce water.

  • Eat lots of veggies and fruits (except in the morning.)

  • Avoid spicy foods.

  • Add bitter and sweet foods to temper the fire.

  • Cucumber, yogurt, mint, Berries, apples, avocado and citrus are good for fire people.

  • Let your food cool down in temperature before eating or eat raw or cool food
