Refilling Your Cup
We've all heard that phrase that "You can't pour from an empty cup." But, what does that really mean? One of the common issues that we face in life, is trying to operate on an empty fuel tank. Why does this happen? Many people struggle with prioritizing themselves first. But why? Often times it's because it's difficult to say no to other's requests and perhaps we feel a bit selfish when putting ourselves first. But, the reality is that if we become depleted, we truly are unable to be there for others. So, let's talk about strategies to build in some much needed "me time."
One strategy that I recommend is to put yourself on your 'to-do' list. Yes, add items to your 'to-do' list that you look forward to, items that energize you or relax you. You might find that you de-prioritize getting these items done initially but eventually, you will find the value to add them in.
Here's an example: If you have 'laundry' as an item on your 'to-do' list, you might put if off for a day or two. But, after a week, you literally HAVE to do the laundry, otherwise you won't have any clean clothes to wear. Prioritizing yourself and your needs is similar. If you continue to de-prioritize your needs, you will find that you begin to feel, drained, depressed, anxious, short-tempered, angry etc. When this begins to happen, it will become more apparent that your needs MUST move to the top of your 'to-do' list.
As you begin to prioritize your needs, whether it be time for hobbies, relaxation, journaling, going in nature, exercising, meditating or taking a bubble bath etc., you will find that your energy-levels, mood and motivation begin to increase. And in fact, you will be more present and available to be there for others as well. It's a win-win.
