Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue describes a type of massage that involves applying firm pressure and slow strokes to reach deeper layers of muscle and fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles). It's used for chronic aches and pain and contracted areas such as a stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders.
Deep Tissue massage is not for the faint of heart however. Do to the deep pressure applied it can be quite uncomfortable. However, many clients prefer this method and will endure a little bit of discomfort due to it's long lasting and noticeable results.
Potential Benefits

Limited mobility
Recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls)

Postural problems
Muscle tension in the hamstrings, glutes, IT band, legs, quadriceps, rhomboids, upper back
Osteoarthritis pain
Sciatica

Not all of these benefits have been scientifically proven, but according to Consumer Reports magazine, 34,000 people ranked deep tissue massage more effective in relieving osteoarthritis pain than physical therapy, exercise, prescription medications, chiropractic, acupuncture, diet, glucosamine, and over-the-counter drugs.
Deep tissue massage also received a top ranking for fibromyalgia pain. However, make sure to communicate with your massage therapist throughout the session regarding your pain level so that they can adjust the pressure and techniques accordingly. Clients often notice an improved range of motion and decrease in pain immediately after a deep tissue massage.
